Help finding the shadier way.

Find your first walk

  1. Move the map to where you want to start and tap Find a shady walk.
  2. Choose how long you want to walk, and a loop or a one-way walk, then tap Find shady walks.
  3. Swipe between the three routes, compare their shade, distance, and time, and tap Start walk.

Why is map data downloading?

Cool Walk plans routes on your iPhone. It first downloads tree-canopy and street data around the part of the map you're viewing, then keeps it for next time. If the first download is interrupted, try again on a steady connection.

Location or guidance isn't working

Open iOS Settings, find Cool Walk, and allow location access. During a walk, keep Precise Location on for the best progress and turn guidance. Background location is used only while a walk is active.

Spoken turns

Cool Walk says "Coming up" as you near a turn and "At the corner" when it's time to turn. Turn announcements can use the built-in iOS voice or an optional natural voice, which is a separate download of about 150 MB. If announcements are silent, check Announce turns in the app's options and your iPhone's volume.

Where does it work?

Tree-canopy routing covers the contiguous United States. Shade estimates come from overhead tree canopy, not real-time shadows, so conditions on the ground can differ.

Is the app free?

Yes. Every Cool Walk feature is free. There's no subscription, in-app purchase, or paid tier.
